Burglar punches Police Dog

A WOULD-BE burglar who allegedly punched a police dog in Melbourne’s north was taken to hospital last night suffering bite wounds.

The 46-year-old Lalor man had allegedly been trying to steal copper wiring from a Mahoney’s Rd factory in Thomastown around 10pm when he was tracked down by police.

Approached by the canine unit with help from a police helicopter, the man to allegedly punched the dog, a police Rottweiler named Nat, several times.

When Nat’s handler tried to intervene, the man then turned on the handler.

Nat persisted and subdued the man who in-turn suffered bite wounds to his face, arms and legs and was taken to the Northern Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He is expected to be charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal, assaulting a police officer and theft.
